🌍 German – a bridge, not a barrier: Schlaraffia is a uniquely German-speaking fraternity – worldwide. The shared language of the Sippungen is German, wherever the lodge may be. In South America, the USA, or Eastern Europe, you will meet Schlaraffen who speak the local language and German – whether as their mother tongue or joyfully learned. Joining Schlaraffia outside the German-speaking world is actually a wonderful way to practise or rediscover German, explore the culture, and enjoy humour and friendship that transcend borders.
In brief
Schlaraffia is a worldwide brotherhood with over 160 years of history. Around 260 local communities – called Reyche – meet regularly for Sippungen: playful evenings full of humour, music, poetry and theatre.
The motto: In arte voluptas – In art lies joy. What divides in everyday life – profession, politics, religion – is left behind at the door of the Burg (the meeting place).
