How old is Schlaraffia?
Schlaraffia was founded on 10 October 1859 in Prague – by twelve German artists and intellectuals. It is one of the oldest still-active communities of its kind in the world. → History
How many Reyche are there?

What is taboo at Schlaraffia?
Politics, religion and professional matters are expressly forbidden during Sippungen. What divides in the outside world stays at the door. A doctor, a craftsman, a teacher and an entrepreneur are simply Schlaraffen here – equals.
Are there women in Schlaraffia?
Schlaraffia is an all-male fraternity – not out of hostility to women, but because the community originated at a time when club life was exclusively male. Women are greatly appreciated and in some Reyche are involved as so-called Burgfrauen.
Questions about the Sippung
What happens at a Sippung?
Every Sippung follows a playful structure: opening by the Oberschlaraffe, performances by members (music, poetry, theatre), playful Pönen for Schlaraffian transgressions, and convivial gathering. → The game in detail
How often does a Reych meet?
Most Reyche meet weekly or fortnightly in the evenings. The exact frequency is set by each Reych individually. The Schlaraffian season is called Winterung (October to April). In summer (Sommerung, May to September), official play pauses; informal gatherings called Krystallinen take place instead.
What are Pönen?
Pönen are playful penalties: anyone who is too serious or commits a transgression against the Schlaraffian spirit is "pöned" and pays a small symbolic fine – usually €1 to €3. More fun than punishment.
What is a Pilger?
A Pilger is a guest – a man who does not yet know Schlaraffia. Up to three visits are possible, accompanied by a sponsor, completely free and non-binding.
Membership & joining
How much does membership cost?
Costs vary by Reych. As a rule: your first three visits as a Pilger are free. Membership fees are modest – usually between €10 and €30 per month. There are no initiation fees.
Do I need to be able to sing or perform?
Not at all. Contributions are voluntary. Many members begin simply by listening and laughing. The important thing is the spirit of participation – not artistic perfection.
How do I find a Reych near me?
Use the search on our homepage or browse the list of all Reyche. Or write to us – we will be happy to put you in touch.
Is German required?
The language of the Sippung is German. However, in many Reyche outside the German-speaking world, members are happy to help beginners. Schlaraffia is actually a wonderful way to practise German in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.
